Xbox 360 and Kinect another star of Black Friday

Amazon’s Kindle was one hot gadget of this year’s Black Friday sales and today, Microsoft announces that the Xbox 360 was popular as well. During the week of Black Friday, over 960,000 consoles were sold. More than 800,000 of those sales occurred within a 24 hour period. More than 750,000 Kinect for Xbox 360 sensors were sold as standalone accessories or as bundled with the console.

One reason the Xbox 360 was a popular item this year was because of a price reduction on Black Friday at Wal-Mart, Amazon, and other retailers that took the console down to $199. The other reason boils down to games available on the platform.

Xbox 360 has a growing Kinect portfolio of more than 75 new Kinect for Xbox 360 titles – four times more than last holiday season. New titles include sequels to best sellers, including “Kinect Sports: Season Two” and “Dance Central 2.” Xbox 360 also released exclusive games this holiday season with titles like “Gears of War 3,” “Forza Motorsport 4″ and “Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary.”

Although most purchase were probably at a child’s request, other features are coming to the console that will continue to innovate the ways it is used.

In addition to games, on Dec. 6th, the next generation of TV entertainment will begin with the availability of a new Xbox 360 experience, and the launch of the first group of custom entertainment apps on Xbox LIVE. By the end of the year, nearly 40 world-leading TV and entertainment providers, including Comcast and HBO GO, will be available on Xbox LIVE.

With strong sales like this, Microsoft is expecting to take the title of number one console in the U.S. as the year heads towards wrapping up.
