James Cameron at the bottom of Mariana Trench

James Cameron, director of Avatar, has broken a record for the deepest dive. He reached the lowest point of the Mariana Trench yesterday and spent 3 hours there, 7 miles down from the surface.

While he hoped to collect samples to bring to the surface, a hydraulic system fault required the submersible to return to the surface empty-handed.
