Apple has already sold 3 million New iPads

Along with stating what action Apple Inc has decided to take with its excess cash, the company also provided a press release to discuss sales of the New iPad. On this morning’s conference call Apple CEO Tim Cook reminded somebody that asked about iPad sales numbers that the call was only focusing on the decision related to its excess cash. Speculation then bloomed that Apple was being their usual secretive selves about the iPad sales figures.

To contradict that, Apple states that 3 million New iPads have sold since the new iPad launched on March 16th.

“The new iPad is a blockbuster with three million sold―the strongest iPad launch yet,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “Customers are loving the incredible new features of iPad, including the stunning Retina display, and we can’t wait to get it into the hands of even more customers around the world this Friday.”

The cheapest iPad runs $499 for the WiFi & 16GB model. If all 3 million sold iPads were the cheapest model, $499 * 3,000,000 = 1.497 billion. No wonder the company is flush with cash.
